Firefox 3 Preview: Microsoft Killer?

Mozilla is planning to take Firefox 3 to the next stage of the internet. One of the most interesting features will be the ability to use online applications without being connected to the internet. Is Microsoft scared?

Mozilla's Firefox faces an uphill battle against Microsoft's Internet Explorer who is claiming a large majority of web surfers. However, Firefox does have a faithful following, as well as, strong talent and determination. Their release of Firefox 3 could revolutionize the way we use online software that is competing directly with Microsoft.

Of course I'm talking about Google, the online behemoth of search who continues their onward march into Microsoft's territory. The handful of people today who are using Google's word processor are probably itching for just a little bit more, and Firefox 3 might just help make that a possibility. You may no longer need to be connected to the internet to use online apps. They could run right inside your browser with or without an internet connection.

What would make this possible? DOM Storage which uses Document Object Model programming. It's essentially an updated version of the cookies that will run more efficiently and be able to perform more functions. It will allow online applications to run seamlessly inside Firefox 3 and future browsers. The software developer just needs to accept the challenge and work with Firefox. And I'm sure Google is more than ready to integrate their services even more with Firefox.

Mozilla and Google have always gotten together great and there's no question their relationship will continue. That's why I'm wondering if Firefox 3 could be a Microsoft killer, not just an Internet Explorer killer. It could very well lay the groundwork for more market share to leak away from Microsoft. Suddenly, online apps will be very attractive, and users will begin to migrate to services from Google and others.

Of course there won't be an overnight revolution. First, online software developers (Google) need to work with Firefox to integrate their services. And then the consumers will slowly start to test the waters. No longer will they need an internet connection to use use Google Docs and Spreadsheets, or many other Google services. Suddenly Google, together with Firefox, becomes the alternative to Microsoft.
